Pond Hockey

For years there have been pickup hockey games every Sunday at Speaks's pond in McKinley Village. I picked up some used skates for $25 in Fairbanks and have been enjoying joining in the games. The pace is fast but friendly, and everyone that comes to brave the cold has a great time. The talented players drink beer while the beginners (me) suck wind, slurp water, and sweat our asses off.

Snowed In

I think the snow in last six weeks has really put Alaska to shame. A big mid-December east coast storm sent us fleeing for Ohio, where we were treated to a white Chrismas in Columbus and snow-covered visits to both Toledo and Cleveland. Then a slippery, snowy New Year's at Whitetail ski slope in Pennsylvania. In mid-January we were caught in a snow storm in northern Arizona that forced us to endure an extra day at the Grand Canyon (travesty!), delaying our flight home. Now, two weeks later, my flight back to alaska has been cancelled on account of the most recent mid-atlantic snow storm! No choice but to spend an extra day here with Cheri. Darn.

It's been a great furlough this year, but now it's time to quit being a bum and get back to work.

Cheers!
