Summer Fun

No shortage of excitement around here in the last few weeks.

I rode my bike out the park road a few Saturdays ago. Went about 50 miles and through some good mountain passes to get to Toklat road camp and spent the night with some friends, then caught a bus back the next day.

Last weekend I was part of a search party looking for 2 missing hikers. We set out at 9pm and one of the other search parties found them at 3am. It was a long night of tromping through the forest in a rain storm, but was pretty exciting to be part of an organized search and rescue.

Last week the weather was good enough to finally get some sound equipment up to Kahiltna Pass. It is right next to Mt. McKinley, at about 10,300 ft elevation, and right smack in the middle of the Alaska Range. We got to use the special high altitude rescue helicopter called the "Lama" because the normal one I use can't go that high.

The Solstice was on Thursday so we're back to losing daylight, but we have plenty to spare at the moment.

I'll be at the Grand Canyon on a "business trip" August 4-11th.

Here are the photos taken along the way...

Ian fishtailing the dogsled.
George found a wormhole in the Eldridge Glacier.
The Ravens got bigger (compare to last post).
Bike trip over Polychrome Pass.
Crevasses in the Kahiltna Glacier.
Captain Yellowshirt and the sound station on Kahiltna Pass.
The Lama high altitude helicopter coming to pick us up.
Cheers!

Jared, Nice picts as usual. I hiked in Sproul State Forest, in PA, a couple of weekends ago. Near Williamsport south of Mom & Dads. 21 tough miles with 40 pounds or so in terrain higher than Ohio. Saw a large timber rattler and a bear. Everyone made it though and it was a good practice for Philmont. We'll be in New Mexico starting the 11th. Stay cool.

Jared, Nice picts as usual. I called in sick again today but I think they're "onto me" so I'd better be careful.

I slept until about noon and then got up and watched TV for a couple of hours until I got bored. I ate a big lunch and took a nice nap on the couch. After wake-up, I thought about going outside to wash the SUV but decided I'd better stay indoors where it's nicely air-conditioned. No sense in risking heat stroke or sunburn. Besides, it looked kind of windy out there too.

While gazing out the window I spotted a chipmunk on my driveway eating what looked like a piece of pepperoni. That seems a little unusual, but regardless it's great to be so close to nature and to observe the behavior of wild animals in their habitat. I can certainly relate to your experiences in Alaska.

Ha, ha. OK, well, I had to respond to Uncle Steve's wholesome post and remind you how the rest of us live!

Enjoy Alaska and take care.

Uncle Paul

Hi: Grandpa here. Glad things are going well up there. We catch up on your activities via the blog and e-mails with your folks and phone conversations. Not much news here or excitement. We will be going to Ohio when Ryan's Eagle presentation will be made, which will probably be just before or after Brent leaves. Will write more later. Take care and watch out for the bears.

Hi Jared, My name is Janet and I work at Mark Twain State Park with your Grandpa. He is a great guy and a good photographer too, as I am certain you know. I was in Alaska for 2 weeks the beginning of June and loved it. My first time. Grandpa asked me if I saw you. I did Glacier Bay and an all-day Denali bus trip to the end and back after doing a 10-day bike trip with a group in Juneau, Haines & Skagway. It was great! In Denali, I saw lots of animals and fantastic scenery and got to see the mountain too with only a few clouds. Your photograohs are wonderful. Enjoy!
